A partly cloudy January 26th.

The weather, currently.

Partly cloudy today, but the UV rating will be extreme.

Today’s wake up temperature of 16˚C will be overcast, but clouds will soon part, making way for a mild summer’s day with a forecast top of 22˚C. Light south to south-westerly winds of 15 to 20 km/h in the middle of the day will tend south to south-easterly at 15 to 25km/h in the early afternoon. The UV rating will be extreme at 11, so do cover up out there.

The 26th of January is a national public holiday, celebrated by some as “Australia Day” and commemorated by others as “Survival or Invasion Day”. This weather report is written each day from the beautiful, leafy, seaside lands of the Boon Wurrung people, where land was never ceded, no treaty was ever signed, and reparations for the attempted obliteration of a culture and a people have never been made.

Today, my family and I will pay our respects to the traditional custodians of this beautiful place we are lucky enough to call home at our local Our Survival Day event. As the effects of climate change take an ever-intensifying hold on this land, it is vital that we listen to and engage with the indigenous peoples who thrived here in harmony with the land, waters and sky for over 60 thousand years before colonisers arrived. That’s what I’ll be doing, under the sun, in the breeze, with the next generation’s hand in mine.
